Gabriel Liston on KBOO

Gabriel Liston has moved his studio into the New American Art Union, producing an exhibition called Take That and Stand By for Trouble. We can watch the progress on a work and also check out his diaries from at least several years. These journals appear to be old children's books. He has ripped out the innards, replacing them with his art life. Art life, meaning not just nice drawings and ideas but all the money and struggle bits. Liston will be my guest this Tuesday on Art Focus.

John Stezaker

The Portland 2010 Biennial at the Templeton Building held a room of work by John Brodie. Brodie is an artist I showed at Lovelake and I’ve always been a fan, but when I came across the heads of hair and faces filled with un-face-like things, I became strangely confused.

That’s because my art mind was already heady with the work of John Stezaker, who has recently been profiled in Artforum and Modern Painters. After a lifetime of montaging, he’s hot, hot, hot. I’ve toyed with the intersection of body + place too but Stezaker masterminds this field so well, so extensively, he owns it.

It’s been said that Stezaker, the “King of Collage,” makes “the simplest” ones. That’s a rare and confident thing, an indication of his emotional ownership in images he mines. I confess that I relate, not just adore and feel encouraged.

Recently someone observed that most photomontage presented an array of scattered images, emphasizing the overabundance and bombardment, whereas I edited and sliced close to the bone. Stezaker slices even closer, often using just two images. The results can be startling, surprising in their simple assault. He lets the landscape invade the individual in ways that seem spiritually inevitable and also painful.

Victor Maldonado on KBOO

Victor Maldonado has a beautiful exhibition up at Froelick, all green paintings. From what I understand, this installation is comprised of panels in size of all the TV screens he has ever lived with. Maldonado addresses cross cultural identity and traffic via the monochrome. I am looking forward to having him on Art Focus this coming Tuesday.

Richard Speer on KBOO

Tom Cramer is still guest hosting Art Focus and tomorrow, art critic and bon vivant Richard Speer will be his guest. Richard is one of my favorite people in Portland and it's sure to be a great interview.

Tom Cramer guest hosts on KBOO

While I'm in NYC Tom Cramer will guest host Art Focus on KBOO. His first interview is with the sign painter Mr. Finesign. When you look through the signs, you are going to be amazed at how much of Portland is there. He has painted most of my favorite places, new and old. Thanks to Tom for helping me out - he's been on KBOO many times.
