Ashland


Ah, how wonderful it is to be here in Ashland. The Museum put me up at the Ashland Springs Hotel, which I will forever think of as The Mark Anthony. It still maintains a sweet Art Deco flair, towering over all of Ashland. 


And what a great time I had last night. Old high school friends, new artist friends (like Steven LaRose, who took the pic of the show above) joined me; even my mom was there. Right now my life is in intense upheaval and change, so it was really nice to be in this place of a happy and secure childhood. Yes yes yes. Thank you.

Paintings at the Schneider Art Museum.

If you are in Southern Oregon this summer, please stop by the Schneider Art Museum. The show runs all through mid-September. Plus I am showing with some cool rugs. The curator probably doesn't know that rugs had a lot to do with the image I make. My grandfather, half Native, had a small, humble, excellent collection. They were the first abstract images I absorbed.

Tomorrow is the reception and I will be there.

Deep Field Gallery on KBOO


After a brief hiatus I will return to Art Focus with an interview of artists showing at the new Deep Field Gallery. Deep Field is a Chroma project. It opens on July 5TH, with a preview on June 30TH. Curated by Jennifer Porter, who will also join us, the show is called Steel Environics. The gallery is located at 1126 NW 13TH. Featured artists are Garrett Price, Stephen A. Miller, Brian Mock and Eric Holt.

The New and The Old


Yesterday I was out of my old house. I found then that as I ran into stashed photos of it on my hard drive, I wanted to viciously erase. The gardens, the herbs, the yards, the trees, and all those images which were used to sell it online. Like our whole life was for sale. That's crazy thinking but it's not unusual for me to radically divest. I do not have a lot of clothes, books and many things - I ditch the past in an effort to embrace the new in front of me.

Save diaries of course. I have 160 notebooks now and when I want to look back, I look at those. Reading of exhibitions is especially grueling, as are ideas about bodies of work which now would make one wince. Artists grow up in public.

And save of course the art of collage, in which new and old become one. My first collage was of Lucy, one from the 1930s, when she was not the savvy business woman and master comedian we know now. She was a Babe. I remember it well because the collage was glued to an index box I used in debate in sophomore year in high school. Well, we are full circle because my most recent Target (No. 61)  - and maybe my last - is again of Lucy (see above). She is a God here. As is often the case, the element which initially seemed most precious - her flaming red 1940s red pompadour - was the one to be sacrificed.

I Don't Know Anything


The movers come in a few hours.

In one box are all the photographs (film and Polaroids) that I have taken since I lived here. As I packed the box I couldn't resist peeking into the envelope which held my first roll, 1997. It is full of pictures from the Gorge. Spooky isn't it? I shot my destiny, clueless about it all.

The roll also has the people in my life, a family in awkward new roles. It's amazing how well the camera captures our unease and insecurity. No one knew who they really were in those initial stages. We thought we knew but of course we didn't.

This time I am trying to be more mindful of the fact that I don't know anything. Even though I am from this state, have lived here most of my life. Mystery is not just a concept but at this point, a complete lifestyle, streaming into my windows.

Waiting for Sun

On June 28, 2012 I will open my first museum show. The Schneider Art Museum in Ashland, Oregon will show my paintings. I'll post more details soon. Right now I leave you with another view from my studio. Next time, sunshine.

A New View


Art Focus at KBOO was scheduled out this month but that has all changed. Mar Gorman will still be interviewed next week, but AM Producer Kathleen Stephenson will do it. Mar will certainly be in good hands.

In the meantime, I am moving to a new view (see above). My house sold. This is of course great news but then I got into a real panic about where to live. It was breaking my heart to get shoved into a one bedroom with no space for a studio. And thank God, that's not going to happen. There shall be space and space and space. And sky and water, as it turns out.

Exhibition & Release & Reception

This week on Art Focus we will cover an exhibition called Exhibition & Release & Reception  - opening on the 7th - curated by Jeanine Jablonski at The Cleaners @The Ace Hotel. The show pairs MFAs from PSU with exhibiting artists. Guests on the radio will be Kristan Kennedy, who directed PSU's MFA Studio Visiting Artist Lecture Series, along with two of the participating students, Evan La Londe and Jessica Hickey. (There is also printed matter: [STUDIO], edited by Lisa Radon - it celebrates the completion of a publication produced in response to visits by the artists of the 2011-12 PSU MFA Studio Lecture Series.

Goose Hollow

My next radio show will focus on Exhibition & Release & Reception, a group show curated by Jeanine Jablonski, who directs Fourteen30. More on that show in the next post.


Fourteen30 has a new space. It's in Goose Hollow and is absolutely gorgeous. Just being in that gallery did my soul good.

I used to live in this neighborhood. A million times I have recorded in my diary the sweetness of those times and that place. While I was not there during its heyday of the late 1960s, I could still feel the vibe when I moved there in 1981. ....walking through a tunnel to the other side, to a fantasy of old blooms, old houses and artists working everywhere. The nostalgia of this place I still associate with the early 80s and the dawn of New Romanticism - The Scars, The Undertones, The Passions, Visage.

I lived in an old Victorian owned by Nicholas Hill and his family, who helped found the Storefront Theater. What a basement this house had! - filled with old magazines I gladly hoarded and then cut up; stuffed with a treasure trove of ruffly white blouses, cast-offs from the 60s - meant to be worn in Edwardian style so well promoted by the Mods or bands like The Hollies. Overnight my wardrobe went completely white.

This all sounds like fashion or style but it is really more a state of mind. Most of it was in my head - but I have learned to not dismiss that, nor let anyone else dismiss it. That's where most things are, right? The happiness or the sadness? The concept of success or failure. Without the interior space, there really isn't much of anything.
